As far-fetched as that might sound, in some ways it would actually be a relatively plausible origin for ET visitors. If aliens live underneath the ice of Europa or Enceladus, it would be a fairly simple matter to send spacecraft to Earth using technology not much more advanced than our own. On the other hand, if aliens came from another star system, one of the biggest mysteries would be how they broke the speed of light to get here.
Although science fiction is full of ways to sidestep Albert Einstein's celestial speed limitâthink of warp drives, worm holes, and hyperspaceâactual science has no idea how to make it happen. But we ourselves have sent probes to the farthest reaches of the outer solar system, and if this is feasible for human beings, there's no reason to think it wouldn't be feasible for any neighboring ETs.
